For those of you who don't know, El Rey has stolen my heart! I have changed my program structure more than once during this "miniature" endeavor, but I just keep coming back to the extraordinary horse that El Rey is, and his INCREDIBLE BREED: the FALABELLA !
2010 will begin my last breeding transition. I know where my heart lies, and it's with the preservation and promotion of the Argentine Falabella. And, of course, El Rey will continue to be the "backbone" of my Falabella breeding program for as long as he lives. (His grandfather lived to be 42 years old!)
Falabellas are the world's first, TRUE Miniature horse, not a pony, not just a "miniature", but a HORSE BREED, in the true, unadulterated meaning of the word. Hats off to Senor Julio Falabella, his wife, Maria Luisa B. de Falabella, and his daughter, Maria Angelica Falabella, and the remarkable breeding program of this family for the past--well--almost 2 centuries! Even though these pint-sized horses are small, they pack a punch with sheer elegance, superb conformation, friendly disposition and striking color. The features of the Falabella are harmonious and in the same proportion as a bigger horse.
Falabellas are a BREED--and have several unique "breed" features. The Falabella gestation period (pregnancy) is longer than other horses, most times lasting from 12 to 13 months as opposed to the normal 11 months. Also, they have 17 vertebrae instead of 18, and 2 less ribs than other horses. They also have the most unique hard, small oval hooves. These are physiological differences that other miniatures don't share, but their most outstanding characteristic is their personality and intelligence.
So, El Rey, here's to you!! July 2010
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have worked on this page for about 6 months, but still have no idea what I really want to say...
- That Castle Rock Miniature Horse Farm is an "exploded" childhood dream?
- That "you can't have just one!!" is a very true statement?
- That my kids think I'm crazy?
- That sometimes I think I'm crazy?
No. Truthfully, I really love my horses, and all that comes with them!! There is nothing more special than seeing a foal born, or staying up all night to make sure that the "little mama" that trusts you is given every chance to have a healthy baby. To watch that baby trying to stand, to watch that baby kicking up its hooves and running like the wind on the same day it's born! What a miracle of God.
I think that others in this business would agree-we are sometimes REALLY TIRED-especially during foaling season-but it is a GOOD tired! Our job is not a "desk" job-although there's plenty of paperwork! It's not a job where you sit in air conditioning-at least MY barn isn't air conditioned! It's not a job where you drink water from the cooler-but the hose is always close!
But it IS a job where you are followed around by some very inquisitive mare who's shorter than your waist-who just HAS to see what you're doing EVERY minute! And it IS a job where some little boyish stallion will come up and NIP you right in your ARSE! And some little foal will follow you and its mama, until you try to lead them through a gate-THEN you'll see how independent the little ones REALLY are!
I hope you enjoy my website. I do. Yes, my childhood dream EXPLODED! But, I couldn't be happier. Maybe my kids think I'm crazy-but there are ALWAYS grandchildren!! LOL :-)
Come enjoy my "madness!" You'll NEVER regret it! Having them, raising them, showing them, driving them, being a "serious" breeder...there's so much to do--Just treat yourself to a world of fun!
