It has been ten years since the Seth Thomas Collection first came into being and it’s time to reflect on the Incomparable Seth Thomas Legacy.
The Seth Thomas Collection started from a select group of ponies/miniatures that were direct descendants of the great Seth Thomas #26222, one of the top modern Shetland sires in the 1960’s. It is one of the most intensive old bloodlines still thriving today. Seth Thomas was my idol back in the ‘60’s. In the ‘70’s, I had a chance to purchase a small Seth Thomas stallion. I am sure he would have measured 38 inches as miniatures are measured today. He had the same characteristics as his sire; big eyes, sharp head, a long neck and lots of bounce.
In the 1990’s I came across a band of horses that had the same features as the former ponies I once loved. When I found out that they were descendants of Seth Thomas, I realized how strong this bloodline was!
In 1996 I first purchased a double line bred Seth Thomas stallion, 36 inches and double registered ASPC/AMHR. Later I went back and hand picked a group of brood mares, some yearlings, and a 33 inch bay stallion to begin the foundation of one of the more popular miniature bloodlines today. With these select double registered animals, the Seth Thomas Collection was formed.
The Seth Thomas Collection is a group of people dedicated to preserving this famous bloodline by maintaining fifty percent Seth Thomas blood. All horses are double registered ASPC and AMHR, giving one the option to show in the miniature division or as a foundation, classic, or modern Shetland. There are Seth Thomas horses than range in size from 32 inches to 38 inches. The Seth Thomas members are from Florida to Arizona, South Dakota to Ohio and several states in between. Several members now have foals for sale and the Seth Thomas Collection maintains their own website for you to browse and enjoy. Included on the website you will find the history of Seth Thomas and a sale board as well as individual member information.
With expert advice and evaluation of each horse, it was decided to outcross some Seth Thomas offspring with other well-known proven bloodlines. The results were amazing! We maintained the Seth Thomas look and captured some of the qualities of the other bloodlines. Soon they became a factor to deal with in the show ring.
The Seth Thomas Collection horses have an excellent show record over the past 5 years with several Hall of Fame, National, and Futurity Champions to their credit. The Seth Thomas blood is strong; giving them the unique modern look. It is very rewarding for us to see others enjoying horses from the Collection and carrying on the bloodlines of yesteryears Incomparable Seth Thomas. So, after reflecting, we feel we are developing show horses that have now proven
themselves as BOTH halter and driving champions while preserving one of the most
prestigious bloodlines of all times.
The Seth Thomas Collection has just begun and we are proud of the direction it is going. Seth Thomas horses are spunky, vivacious, and they make outstanding show horses with lots of expression, animation, and an overall “look at me” attitude. Now that it has been ten years of selective outcrossing, we have developed a band of mares that we believe are some of the best in the country and all registered AMHR/ASPC. We have raised multiple Horse of the Year Awards, both in hand and in performance, several National Grand Champions, Futurity Champions and National Driving Champions. We are continuing to upgrade and are striving to breed horses that are a STEP AHEAD of our competition.
They are the WAVE OF THE FUTURE!
