A Brief History of The Waterwheel Park
The Waterwheel Park exists today only because of the 40-year labor of love of Bruce and Elna Barron.
It lives in the morning shadow of Lassen Volcanic Peak, and contains within the park site an outstanding collection of early pioneer artifacts from the surrounding cascade mountains.
The original owner/builder of this bucolic setting devoted such time and energy to the conservation and enhancement of the environment within the park that he received Congressional Recognition on September 17, 1973.
You will find on your visit such innovations as a waterwheel-powered rotisserie that can cook large quantities of meat and a self-contained wood fired stone oven for cooking and baking on a grand scale. All of these were built by the Barron’s with recycled materials some of which date back to the mid and late 1800’s. Bruces’s love of the history of the area and its preservation can be seen in the large collection of old pelton wheels as well as many early logging and mining artifacts that are to be found all over the park grounds. A camera is a must!
Also of interest is the abundance of sculptural objects that were created from found objects by Bruce during his tenor at The Waterwheel Park. All of the above truly make a visit here an experience that will not soon be forgotten and often repeated.
