Hello, my name is Katy Koster. I live in Comanche, Texas with my brother, Jeff, and my sister, Nina. My family has a dairy and we raise registered Holsteins. I have grown up showing cows, ponies and miniature horses. Sometimes life can be pretty stressful when you have so many animals to take care of, but I would never change anything about my life.
My mom bought my first mini when I was around eight years old. We started out with unregistered ones, but eventually decided we wanted to go to a show. The rest, as they say, is history. We entered the show ring and it has been non-stop ever since. I have traveled to shows in eight states throughout the last seven years. I have shown both Miniatures and Shetlands. My horses have been recognized as the Miniature Youth Horse of the Year in both the A and B Divisions. My Classic Shetland pony was named Classic Youth Pony of the Year and I have been named the Modern Youth Showman of the Year two times. I have won the Bob Roudebush, Jr. Memorial Showmanship Award in both the Classic and Modern divisions three times each.
In 2005 I served as the Princess for the National Shetland Congress in Gifford, Illinois. In 2006 I served as Princess for the World Show in Columbus, Ohio. Those times are wonderful memories. Working in the center ring was thrilling and I learned many things about what goes on in the middle! When I was younger, I had always hoped one day it would be me wearing a beautiful gown out there. Being selected to serve as the 2008 Queen is a great honor. It is the perfect way to end my youth career. This will be my last season as a youth exhibitor and, while I am excited to reach that milestone, I am sad to be saying good-bye to this part of my life. Of course, I will continue to show and travel with my family to shows, but I will miss being part of this wonderful youth organization.
In the fall of 2008 I will be attending Texas Tech University in Lubbock. That will be quite a new experience for me. While I have traveled across the country, I have never been totally on my own before, that far away from my family. It is exciting to think of starting something so new and different and I am eager for the challenge. I love to work with young children, especially those with special needs. At the present, my plans are to become a Physical Therapist. I want to establish a therapy program for special needs children using Shetland ponies and Miniature horses. My little sister has Down Syndrome and it is evident that her horses have made a big impact on her life. I want to help others find the satisfaction and happiness she has had the opportunities to enjoy, because of her involvement with her ponies and minis.
Some of my other interests are reading, text messaging constantly, talking to my friends, shopping and golf. I am not really a very good golfer, but it is fun!
You will most likely see me at some shows this year; I'll be the one wearing the crown! Please come by and introduce yourself to me because I love to meet new people. I want to take this chance to encourage all youth members of the organization to take advantage of the opportunities this club offers you. All it takes is a little effort and commitment and you have the chance to be part of something great. Get yourself a youth packet, find an award or program and set your goal to win. Even if you do not want to get into the show ring, there are plenty of ways to get involved. I also want to say thank you to the ASPC/AMHR/ASPR/NSPR for everything I have been allowed to achieve and for allowing me to spend all my growing up years as part of this fantastic organization. And to all you exhibitors in the coming year, good luck in the ring and, hey, have some fun out there!
